U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz backed state Sen. Dan Gelber for Florida Attorney General this morning, marking one of his higher-profile endorsements, so far, in a primary race against state Sen. Dave Aronberg.

The South Florida congresswoman said Gelber’s experience as an attorney was the crucial factor in the race, noting that she doesn’t often inject herself into party primaries.

“Dan’s experience is what separates these fine Democrats,” she said.

The Miami Beach Democrat has recently rounded up support from South Florida’s elected prosecutors, and before that, Gelber won Democratic backing from the likes of Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.

His Greenacres primary foe Aronberg has signed on a number supporters from the ranks of North Florida’s elected sheriffs, most recently Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young.

Locally, Democratic Orange-Osceola State Attorney Lawson Lamar has come out for Gelber, and state Rep. Scott Randolph, D-Orlando is lined up behind Aronberg.
