Thanks Doesn't Seem Sufficient

Nov 4, 2010

"Thanks" doesn't seem sufficient. But it will have to do. Looking back on the last year and a half I have absolutely no regrets. My family was unwavering in every conceivable way, staff were dedicated and selfless, friends came through over and over, and supporters showed their true colors at every bend and curve. I couldn't have asked for more, and am absolutely overwhelmed in what you did for me and our campaign.

But after 17 months, we hit a headwind of national voter discontent that was simply too unforgiving.

I'm not the sort to dwell on what could have been. Politics is cyclical and as someone said to me last night, sometimes you just find yourself on the wrong side of history. Or put in less majestic terms, sometimes your toast falls butter-side down. Still, as I read your emails, tweets, texts and posts, and listen to your messages and words of encouragement - I know there are millions of Floridians who stand ready to build a better Florida. And I know our time will come.

So, it's been a real honor to have shared this journey with you. I may have been bested in this contest, but I have long believed with every door that closes another opens.

So, for now, you will have to do without my fundraising emails, but not without my deepest gratitude.

Thanks.

Dan

"The harm that was done by Arthur Nadel to his victims both financially and emotionally can never be fully repaired, but this ruling will hopefully bring some degree of relief to the families and charities he preyed upon.

"Justice has been served. However, too many of these financial crimes with substantial connection to Florida have been prosecuted elsewhere. Florida needs to have more home-based expertise so that we can prosecute economic criminals in the courts where their victims reside. I intend to create an Investment Fraud Unit in the Attorney General's office in order to create a critical mass of expertise in the investigation and prosecution of these types of offenses."

Lacking financial support from Floridians, Bondi receives close to $1 million from outside groups, including groups she would police as Attorney General

Miami Beach, Fla. - The Attorney General Debate that aired last night on Central Florida News 13 and BayNews 9 between State Senator and Democratic nominee for Attorney General Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach) and his Republican opponent Pam Bondi confirmed yet again that Bondi has a clear lack of knowledge about issues affecting the state of Florida. During the debate, Bondi admitted to not even reading the Arizona-style legislation that's been proposed in Florida. Bondi's lack of knowledge on state issues was also glaringly apparent at a Suncoast Tiger Bay Debate in St. Petersburg on June 3 when she could not answer a question about how she voted in 2008 on Amendment 1 because she didn't know what it was, despite it being a highly-publicized constitutional amendment backed by Governor Crist that made significant changes to Florida's property tax system.

"Arthur Nadel unconscionably preyed upon investors and charitable organizations, including fellow seniors and retirees, conning them out of their life savings and ruining lives in the process. Mr. Nadel must pay the full price for the life-altering damage he has caused.

"It's unfortunate that so many of these financial crimes with substantial connection to Florida are prosecuted elsewhere. The state needs the expertise and resources to protect Florida victims in Florida courts. That's why as Attorney General, I will create an Investment Fraud Unit so that we can catch financial crooks like Mr. Nadel before the damage is done and prosecute them here in Florida. "This joint investigation is a welcome and needed step in quickly addressing the alarming number of instances of faulty foreclosures, "robo-signing" and potential fraud in Florida and around the country. An investigation is especially important to provide clarity to a process that demands certainty. "The Attorney General must continue to take appropriate steps to carry out his investigation and demand that Floridians are protected. The industry must also spearhead voluntary efforts to freeze foreclosures when the integrity of the process has been called into question. Our economic recovery is heavily dependent on the strength of the housing market in Florida, and we must be careful not to impede legitimate home sales. However, we cannot tolerate fraud that results in Floridians having their homes unjustly taken from them or that results in clouded titles that further impede lending. If lenders are unwilling to take responsible action, then the Attorney General must consider seeking a temporary freeze on foreclosures and pursue necessary legal action to protect Florida homeowners."

"Today's audit results of the construction of the "Taj Majal" courthouse reflects the utter absence of scrutiny over state government. This latest example shows that too many things operate outside of the sunshine and too few watchdogs are taking charge of cleaning up Tallahassee's corrupt or abusive ways.

"This style of governing is why Floridians are frustrated and angry, and it's time we put an end to it. This backroom deal project is costing taxpayers millions of dollars, and is a clear example that Floridians need someone who will aggressively go after abuse and waste in government. And the only way we can stop this epidemic is by taking forceful action to root out the corruption that plagues our state's capital."

Thank you for your letter of congratulations, and congratulations to you on your primary election victory. I share your opinion that the citizens of Florida should be given the opportunity to hear directly from each of us on the important issues concerning our great state and the Office of the Attorney General.

However, I strongly believe that the voters should be given more than the two opportunities for a public debate that you have proposed. Like you, I believe that the Office of the Attorney General is one of the most important in our state. The people of Florida rely upon the Attorney General to protect their rights, ensure their safety and security, and stand up to the powerful foes that intend them harm.

That is why I believe it is imperative that we give the voters ample opportunity to learn where each of us stands on the many important issues that fall under the purview of the Attorney General. While I appreciate your public challenge to debate on two occasions, I have already accepted invitations to debate you in the following seven debates; I sincerely hope that you will reconsider your position and agree to appear in all venues.

Statement: Gelber Comments on Planned burning of Quran's in Gainesville

Gelber encourages Floridians to take part in month-long activities commemorating Hispanic Heritage

Sep 8, 2010

State Senator and Democratic Candidate for Attorney General Dan Gelber released the following statement on the planned burning of Quran's in Gainesville on Saturday:

"The Dove church in Gainesville could not be more wrong and they should reconsider their patently offensive Quran burning. The demonstration will only inflame the very elements they seek to embarrass and as General Petraeus has pointed out, this action will endanger our troops who already put their lives in harms way and will only further threaten American security. This type of behavior is simply not consistent with bedrock American traditions and principles. The famous words of Pastor Martin Niemoller are instructive when he admonished against silence in the face of wrongdoing. It is particularly important for Americans to speak out to let the world community know that this small group does not represent in any manner the beliefs of the rest of our state or our nation. I urge every office holder and candidate in Florida to similarly condemn this behavior; and I urge righteous men and women of faith - no matter their religious convictions - to similarly admonish against this conduct from their churches and synagogues."

Over the summer, we heard from House leaders that they needed time to gather information to prepare for a Special Session. Now we find out it was nothing more than a political rope-a-dope. It is ironic that House Leaders would spend $200,000 of taxpayer dollars to advance an oil drilling agenda, yet walk away from an opportunity to address legitimate and timely policy issues that will deliver relief. Though the hole has been plugged, the pain continues and our residents need to know Tallahassee is prepared to act."

Release: Democrats Elect Dan Gelber as their Nominee for Attorney General

Florida Democrats today made State Senator Dan Gelber their nominee for Attorney General. Joined by his wife, Joan and their three kids, and hundreds of supporters, Sen. Gelber celebrated the results and pledged to end the politicization of the Attorney General's office and made a commitment to everyday Floridians to be their champion. Sen. Gelber shared the following remarks with supporters:

"I'm running for this office because the Attorney General's office - like so many in Tallahassee - has forgotten its purpose. It's supposed to be the office that sets the standard for justice and social justice in our state. The office that makes sure our most vulnerable citizens are not preyed upon, that civil rights are respected, and that ordinary people are not overwhelmed by the powerful. It's supposed to have the backs of everyday Floridians. Instead of having the back of Floridians, it has become a prop for politicians looking for a political boost. It has forgotten its mission of looking out for everyday Floridians.

"People are mad and frustrated because they feel their government has left them out and behind; that government is looking out for everyone but them. In Florida, one party has been in control and it's time that we bring new leadership with fresh ideas and a commitment to accountability.

"Tallahassee has become overwhelmed with special interests. It's frustrating that lobbyists control government and as a result, more families are left behind by the failed policies coming from their government. It's time we changed course because our future is in peril and this is the election we can make right the many wrongs.

House Republicans "Gavel & Go" Special Session is a "Childish Temper Tantrum"

Tallahassee, Fla. - State Senator Dan Gelber issued the following statement on the Florida House Republican leadership's decision to "gavel and go" without delivering solutions to coastal residents facing growing challenges from the oil spill and denying Floridians an opportunity to have the final say on near-shore drilling:

"In what could be best called a childish temper tantrum, House Republicans today grabbed their ball and stormed off the field allowing petty political battles to trump the best interests of Floridians. They permitted their contempt for the Governor to overwhelm discussion of a fair and timely policy issue. They succumbed to their basest political instincts at the expense of the interests of those that elected them.

"It is true that this session - in its timing and rhetoric - was filled with politics and political intrigue. And I certainly agree that the legislature has many other things we should be doing right now that will truly address the immediate needs of Floridians relative to the BP spill. In fact, for months I have made specific policy recommendations that will address some of these issues. But all of that doesn't mean we shouldn't have taken up this issue now and given our citizens the chance to vote in November on a near shore drilling ban. The House acted childishly."

"Since May 5th I have been asking the Governor to call a Special Session to address a near-shore drilling ban. I am heartened by Governor Crist's apparent decision to do precisely that. I would hope, however, that in addition we would address the immediate needs of our citizens who are already feeling pain and anxiety from the spill. I would hope we would:

* Revise statutes to maximize recovery for victims
* Give Attorney General environmental crimes authority
* Create compensation commissioner to facilitate recovery
* Provide Small Business Relief

"I know it's not easy navigating this crisis in the vortex of an election cycle. But that's a challenge not an excuse. We need action and a Special Session is where we should be."

Dan Gelber Joins Thousands of Floridians for Hands Across the Sand

Lining up from coast to coast, Floridians are demanding No Drilling Off Florida's Coast

Jun 26, 2010

St. Petersburg, Fla. - State Senator Dan Gelber today joined the thousands of Floridians in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. for Hands Across the Sand. Floridians lined up along Florida's coastline to let state and national leaders know that drilling off Florida's coast is not an option.

"There is no question that Floridians are voicing their demands that we protect our pristine coastline from near-shore drilling," said Sen. Gelber. "We have seen the pain inflicted on our environment and economy from the disastrous BP oil spill. It's time that the pro-drilling caucus in the legislature ends their filibuster for a constitutional amendment that will allow Floridians to cast a vote that protects Florida's beaches."

Miami, Fla. - State Senator Dan Gelber today qualified for the 2010 election cycle as a Democratic Candidate for Attorney General. A former top federal prosecutor for nearly a decade and Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate's Committee on Investigations, Dan Gelber is prepared to lead as Florida's next Attorney General.

"Floridians have not had an experienced lawyer as their Attorney General since Bob Butterworth," said Christian Ulvert, Gelber's campaign manager. "Dan's record of accomplishment — as a top federal prosecutor, a skilled attorney and an effective legislator - makes him uniquely qualified to win in both August and November. Dan is by far the most experienced candidate running for this office with a proven record of always standing up for Floridians."

"As a federal prosecutor, I put drug dealers, violent gang members and corrupt public officials in jail," said Dan Gelber. "As Attorney General, I will continue to lead with the same passion that guided me long before I ran for public office. I look forward to an exciting and healthy campaign cycle that will bring fresh ideas and a new direction for our state."

Miami Beach, Fla. - State Senator Dan Gelber, Democratic Candidate for Attorney General today released the following statement on news that BP announced the establishment of a $20 billion escrow fund:

"It's a start, but there are still so many unknowns. While I hope it's enough, I fear it may not be if the worst of scenarios become our reality. We may be addressing an environmental disaster that severely hampers our economy for decades. If that happens, Florida's share of $20 billion will be woefully inadequate

"Our small businesses in coastal counties are hurting and bleeding revenue and BP must take full responsibility to pay the claims from their losses. The next step is to ensure that claims are being fully paid and that the proper compensation mechanisms with full transparency are in place."

State Senator Dan Gelber, Democratic Candidate for Attorney General today released the following statement on President Obama's call to establish a victim's compensation fund with a Special Magistrate:

"The Deepwater Horizon oil spill has become our nation's worst environmental disaster and the economic impact brewing in our state deepens as the oil reaches our shores. This is why must hold BP accountable for their gross negligence and demand that Floridians suffering losses from the oil spill are justly compensated.

"I applaud President Obama for his steadfast leadership during this extraordinarily challenging crisis and glad to see that steps will be taken to create a compensation fund similar to the one created for victim's of 9/11. This is a critical path that we must embark in to ensure that 100-percent of claims filed by Floridians are paid for by BP and our communities are made whole."

"Governor Crist did the right thing for consumers by vetoing SB 2044. For the second year in a row, Governor Crist vetoed legislation that tilted the rate-setting playing field away from consumers. SB 2044, like last year's HB 1171 would have caused rate increases that were simply unbearable to many of our citizens in trying economic times. Miami, FL— Joining together from coast to coast, CFO Alex Sink, State Senator Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach), and State Representatives Keith Fitzgerald (D-Sarasota) and Rick Kriseman (D-St. Petersburg) called on Governor Charlie Crist to reconvene the legislature for a special session to consider a constitutional amendment that would ban drilling off of Florida's beaches. Hosting press conferences in Miami and St. Petersburg, the three lawmakers released proposed legislation they intend to file should the legislature be called into special session.

The tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico and the growing impact to Florida's coastline and economic engine underscores the need for some in the legislature to drop the issue of oil drilling entirely," said State Sen. Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach). "Florida's fragile coastline and its beautiful beaches are the backbone of our multi-billion-dollar tourism industry. Shortsighted fixes to meet today's energy demands are a real threat to Florida's most unique economic and environmental asset. We need a united front to fight the big oil interests who want to open the waters around our state to drilling."

Sen. Gelber to Gov. Crist: Recall the Legislature to Halt Oil Drilling and Public Corruption

Senator Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach) on Tuesday sent the following letter to Gov. Charlie Crist calling for a special session to address the growing threat of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and public corruption legislation that was left unaddressed.

May 4, 2010

The Honorable Charlie Crist
Governor, The State of Florida
Tallahassee, Florida 32399-1399

Dear Governor Crist:

The only thing more troubling than the issues passed by the Florida legislature this year were the issues left on the table. Now is the time to call the Legislature back, tell them to finish the job, and address head on the growing threat to Florida's economy from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

You have indicated previously you intended to call a Special Session to address the public corruption issues plaguing our state. I urge you to follow your initial instinct. As a former federal prosecutor who spent the better part of a decade battling corruption, I was disheartened that the legislature found time to engage so many industry food fights and unnecessary ideological frolics, while ignoring an issue that is truly in need of attention. In the last few years we have had scandals reaching the highest level of state government; yet the legislature seemed too preoccupied with its own partisan agenda and unconstrained ambitions, to advance any major reforms.

Therefore, I would urge you to call the Legislature back to Tallahassee to address these two important issues.

Tallahassee, Fla. - Following a lengthy debate on a last minute amendment by Republican Senate Leaders that takes aim at women across Florida, State Senator Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach) issued the following statement:

Shame on the Republican backed effort that places these unconscionable burdens on women who have already gone through enough trauma in their life.

"I am also extremely disappointed by Senate Leaders in their effort to continue to push a politically driven agenda during the final days of the legislative session. While Floridians struggle with finding jobs, mortgage payments and making ends meet, Senate Republican Leaders have chosen to put politics above substantive policy to address the challenges of the day."

"Senate Bill 6 was not the product of thoughtful collaboration between teachers, administrators and experts. Rather it was borne directly from a right wing think tank. It was laden with conservative ideology, untested theories and political payback. I opposed it because I was not willing to let my children be part of some political game or become lab rats in some education experiment.

"It was unbelievable to see the public outcry over the Republican push of SB 6. The anger came not only from teachers, but also from students and parents who feared the dangerous path Florida was being taken down. SB 6 was wrong for Florida and, more importantly, it would have been wrong for our children. I am relieved that Senate Bill 6 was nixed."

His decision to challenge the constitutionality of the federal health care reform bill that is working its way through the Congress is shortsighted and nothing more than rank demagoguery.

"We live in a state with a full-blown health care crisis. No state (other than Texas) has a higher percentage of uninsured and yet we see more of the same politics as usual from AG McCollum. Though I am outraged by AG McCollum's decision, I am not surprised. AG McCollum has a pattern of blocking health care. He is spending millions to defend the state's failure to provide medical and dental care to poor and disabled children (a suit that he should have settled years ago).

"General McCollum's decision to use his office to investigate ways to block health insurance reform is wrongheaded and will cost millions and millions of dollars in a legal battle that is unwarranted. We need solutions to our health care crisis, not obstructions!"

"I do think it is unfortunate that Attorney General Bill McCollum refused to file a school funding lawsuit as I urged him to do last month.
