Stepping back.

May 31, 2009

By Dan

As you may know I have decided to step back from my U.S. Senate bid. I wanted to let you know the reasons.

When Governor Crist announced he would be a candidate for US Senate, he created a domino effect that opened up every seat on the cabinet. At a time when our state is facing its greatest challenges, ironically, we have our greatest uncertainty and dislocation. But I believe this is also an opportunity – the chance to set a new course that avoids the mistakes of the past and tracks a better future for our families.

It makes little sense -- when we do face the prospect of real change in Florida -- for me to participate in a potentially divisive primary for U.S. Senate that will only serve to diminish our chances against a very formidable and well-known Republican nominee.

I also believe that we have a historic opportunity here in Florida to reshape the political landscape and more importantly, bring fundamental change to Tallahassee.  I have had a number of conversations with Senators Graham and Nelson, and CFO Alex Sink, about how we can best unify our party and move forward with a slate of candidates that can communicate our vision for a better Florida, and I look forward to continuing these discussions.  I would like to hear your thoughts as you have been a good supporter and friend, and I value your opinion. You can reach me at dan@dangelber.com.

Thanks again.

Thank you for looking at the bigger picture of Florida and putting the people of our state first. Please continue your work in support of our public schools. We have so many problems that are still not being addressed on a national, state, or local level. Thanks for all you do!

What you've done is a selfless act of public service that few would be willing to do. You're the type of public servant we need. Good luck in your future endeavors.

We need more progressive voices everywhere, so I hope taking a step back from this is only a temporary detour to a place where you can have even more influence over the direction of our country.

Wish you would stay in, but your decision is very statesman like and I know you are doing what you think is best. I hope the rumors are true and you are considering running for Attorney General. Florida needs you.

I think you should either run for the seat that U.S. House seat Meek is vacating, or run for Attorney General or run on the ticket with Alex Sink as her Lt Governor.

Gelber for Attorney General. I'm all in.

I think your a straight shooter and should pursue a path that you believe will most benefit the people of the state of Florida. Your decision is admirable we need more people who see the big picture.

Hi Dan,

It's Eliot Corvin. Im really proud of you and been following your career and I know you have good intentions to help florida and its residents. Which ever way you decide to run you always will have my vote.

Good luck,
Eliot

Governor Gelber? - Robin L.

Dan,We met at the Seminole Democrats cookout. I just wanted to say I am sorry about the Senate race, but I am glad you and Kendrick were able to work things out. It was a classy move on your part. Does this mean you will be running for AG? I am sure this is a tough time, but keep in mind that you have friends in Seminole and we have your back!Keep in touch,Steve B.

Anything you want to do, Dan, I'm all behind you. You are a fine and intelligent public servant. Florida needs you. - Steve H.

Dan -I'm sorry I couldn't join you on Saturday. I hope you run for Attorney General. - Hilda

May I respectfully suggest that you consider running for the Cabinet-level position of Attorney General? With your credentials and background, I submit you would be a very qualified candidate for the post.- Lane

Very well said, and although the news is disappointing, I wish you good luck with whatever you decide to do in the future! - Linda

I think you would have a great chance of winning the attorney general's seat. I hope you will run for this. - Julie

Best of luck moving forward. I hope to see you in state-wide office.

Be that as it may, Dan Gelber has earned my respect and admiration. I stand by my statement that Dan is one of the most talented and intelligent public servants around. All the best.Everett EvanskyMaimi, FL

Dan: I'd like to see you in the Governor's chair!!

We're behind you whatever your decision.

I think you are making the right decision.

Dan, Robert and I are proposing a Charter HS School for Key Biscayne. Since Charter has only been around since 1996 it can not afford a cut in funding. Presently at 5,400 - 6,400 per student. Where is it planing to fall to?.I am happy you are staying local and staying vocal..,Good Luck old friend.mc

RUN FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL!!!!!!!!! - JS

I know this was a difficult decision for you. There is no doubt that Florida need good leadership to dig us out of the mess that the Republicans have made of it over the past decade. I applauded your willingness to step aside from the US Senate and I hope sincerely that you will run for attorney general as I think you would be fantastic! - JC

Dear Dan: Please run for Attorney General or Governor. If Alex Sink actually runs for Governor, I believe that you would be the best Attorney General Florida has been waiting for for such a long time. - Sheila

Please consider running for attorney general. - David

You're a class act! I should have been happy to support you to the end in your race for the Senate, but I think you have a made a decision that will benefit our party and the state in the long run. I hope you will continue to let me and other Gelber enthusiasts know how we can serve you and our Democratic candidates. - Betty

Dear Dan, As you know, we support you unconditionally. We know this must have been a very difficult decision for you. We look forward to hearing about your future plans, whatever they may be. Thank you for everything you do for our community. - Gayle

Dan:Assuming the rumors are true, the Attorney General race looks very good for you. Not a cake walk of course. But the fact is, you can do so much good in that position. I look forward to hearing more and helping out in this cycle. - Eddy

Dan: I understand your decision and am disappointed that this was not yet your time, but it will come. There are other stepping stones along the way, and I will be there to support you with each new challenge. My personal thought is attorney general, but CFO seems to be the path to the Governor's mansion. Regardless of which path you chose, I look forward to your success. - Keith

Hi Dan, Agree with your decision. Are you considering declaring for Attorney General? Any other considerations?Seems a prudent political decision that positions you for Governor. You have my support !! - Marc

Dan,When you and Kendrick Meek announced for the senate at virtually the same time, my heart broke with anticipation of a bruising primary where I didn't want to pick sides. Now that you're standing down from the senate race, I hope you'll take the opportunity to get into the AG race. You'd be a formidable candidate, and I'd do my best to support you. - Sherman

Dan,

Noble choice. Rarely does a politician subjugate his personal advancement for unity of party. I think they call that statesmanship. Good luck !!

Arnold

I was so impressed and proud of your decision. It is due to (stellar!) Democratic leaders like yourself that our party in growing stronger by the day! Thank you for putting the good of the Democratic Party (and the state of Florida) ahead of personal ambitions. I look forward to supporting whatever direction you decide to take. - Susan B.

You would have made a terrific Senator. The rest of the State should know of your past accomplishments and your present capability to lead us in the future. I hear from mutual friends that you intend to run for Attorney General. I can think of no one better qualified. It would be my pleasure to support you with friendship, finance, time and effort.Regards,Jeffrey

You have our support for whatever position you choose to run. - Robin S.

Your selfless decision has added to the already great respect I have for you. I have no doubt that you would have made one of the most, if not the most, effective U.S. Senators in Florida's history. I also have no doubt that the primary race for the Senate seat would have caused great decisiveness within the Party. Although I am disappointed that I will not have the opportunity to vote for you, I think you made the right decision. I can only hope that you will continue to serve the people of Florida in another capacity. We certainly need your integrity and fortitude. - Gary

Hands down you are the best man for the job of Attorney-General. - Wendy

Thanks for not being a "politician" at any cost. I hope I can support you in the future in your next endeavor to serve the citizens of Florida in another capacity. - Patty

With your passion, back ground, and exp . . .AG all the way. - Don M.

I am excited about the talk I hear concerning your possible race for Attorney General. I would be willing to help you in any way I can. Good luck moving forward, you are a fine public servant and the state of Florida needs you to help chart its course for the future. - Mary

We need you in Tallahassee as our next Attorney General. I can't wait to help. - Kevin

we need you everywhere!AG would be goodlet me knowi will help- Steven A.

Whatever you decide we are always in your corner. - Andy

Mr. Gebler, Since you asked.....based on the shuffling from the domino effect that you mentioned, I hope you make a bid for the AG post. - Kevin D.

It is a great deal to ask, but I would ask you to continue your commitment to Florida and its citizens as its Attorney General. No office is more important in determining what justice and fairness will mean in the State as we try to move it forward from years of less than impartial and overly ideological leadership.

RUN, DAN, RUN (for Attorney General)! - Samantha V.

Its okay. You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Sink has a good shot and you will do well as AG. I remain supportive. - Jane

Hi DG. You have my support in whatever you do. Your thoughts are logical and I am sure good things will come. - Jonathan K.

Smart move. We'll support you in any office you seek. - Judy

Dan, I would love to see you running for AG. - Jean

Dan,

I am disappointed that you decided not to run for Senate but I understand your reasoning and appreciate your email explaining it. I do hope you will run for another state office. If so, I will continue to help fund your campaign and talk to my neighbors about your campaign.God bless! -Brad

Dan,How about a run for Attorney General? It gives you a chance to run in astate wide race and opens up the possibility of running for other statewideoffices at a later date. It also puts another strong Democrat on the stateticket which I think will win if we work as hard as we did last fall.Nancy M.

Dear Dan:This must have been a difficult decision, but we believe you can continue to do great things politically. We think you would make a remarkable Attorney General, and that a ticket with you, Eric Draper, and Alex would tell the voters that Democrats will be on their side in state government. Thanks for all your good work in the Senate. We hope we will have many opportunities to be represented by you in the future.- S

Dear Mr. Gelber,

I applaud you for your decision; it is a selfless one that can make a big difference in the senatorial race since we should have a united party.

Thank you!
SS

Wow! America is so blessed to have someone like you looking to serve in the correct public office. Not looking at the service as a rung on the ladder. I will also send this to all my Sarasota County Friends for a stand-up wake-up message.

- Dan

Your actions and motives for political office seem pure and thoughtful. You appear to want the best for our state. Working together with other democrat leaders shows that you are placing the people of our state ahead of your own ambition. That takes courage and commitment. You are a rare and true statesman. I almost deleted your message but I'm glad that I did not. You restored a sense of hope for me. Continue to work for the people and I know that you shall reach your personal goals and dreams.

Best regards,
Christine

With u at ag

I believe with your background and demeanor you would be an outstanding fl attorney general. I believe the time is now for rational and intelligent individuals to be leading our state. - Lori

Dear Dan:

My suggestion is run for State Attorney General or stay in the state Senate.

Regards,
Mark S.

Great decision Dan! Floridians need you now more than ever. Our state faces such daunting challenges and there are so few politicians that represent the people's interests. You are one of the very few bright representatives that we have. I'm glad we are not going to lose you to a combative race. I look forward to supporting you here in our home state. - Stacey

Dan, I think that you made a good decision. I do hope that you will run for a cabinet post. In any case, I'll support you in whatever you do. - Debby B.

Thank you,
Shirley

Dan, you will have my support in all your future political endeavors, whatever they may be. As I'm sure has occurred to you, you'd make a splendid attorney general.

All the best,
Milt

Why not run for AG? Even a loss would raise your profile in the state, and I doubt you would lose. We need more Democrats in highly visible state offices. - Debra

Good decision, now run for Attorney General. - Alan K.

I think you'd make a great Attorney General! We need you in Tallahassee. - Susan

Dan,

You have made a very tough call and I believe that you have the good of the State of Florida and the Democrat party in your heart as well as in your mind at this crucial time. Your credentials are suitable for many positions on our government menu. Take your choice. My humble opinion is Attorney General — a most significant and appropriate place for you to do the most good. One man cannot repair the whole world but every man must try. Florida would be a challenging and sufficient beginning.

Best of luck.

Bill

File for AG, Dan. - M

Dan. Good move. AG is the perfect spot for you. Throw your hat in that ring! - Richard

Let us know which office you will seek. You are a rising star and we look foward to supporting you! - The Gilberts

If you don't put your name in as a candidate for US attorney where I think you would make the biggest impact, I would encourage and support you in a run for Florida's next Attorney General. Wherever you land, you will provide leadership where it is needed. All the best. - HS

I know you don't know me so my opinion is of little consequence, however, I appreciate your asking. Sadly, I think you have made the right decision. I hope, however, that you will consider a run for AG or CFO...we need more than one strong D on the cabinet. some strong Ds on the Cabinet. I would be most interested in helping you with your future endeavors. - Allison

This was a good, gutsy and smart decision. There are many ways for people like you to turn Florida bluer. - NM

Dear Sen. Gelber, My friends and I are delighted and relieved that the Florida Democratic Party has decided to have some discipline. The party needs unity and with it we think we have a very good chance of taking back Florida. We can learn from past mistakes and current success. As to what you should do, we think you would make an excellent Attorney General. With Alex Sink as Governor she will need a very good Attorney General more than a CFO. So this would be our choice for you. But whatever you decide, we will be out there supporting the ticket and you. Thanks for the e-mail....Lee

Dan, I personally take your words to heart. You are one of the best the democratic party has seen in years. As for the black caucus (community) we are with you all the way to the White House. I can speak for us and say you have our full support. - FS

Senator,

I hate that you made this decision because I believe you are what we need. But your "imagine" speech last night made me believe that you would be an extraordinary AG. Lt Gov might be tempting but AG is the guardian of rights and that is right up your alley. As my husband said last night toward the end of your remarks, "gutsiest move I ever saw."

Thank you for your service.

- Heather

Count on me in whatever you do. I think you'd make a great AG! - RVF

You can certainly count on my support in any future campaigns you choose to wage. - Don H.

I am fully in support of you for AG. It makes all the sense in the world. - Benjamin

Florida will be so fortunate to have you as attorney general! Thank you for your commitment to serving the people of Florida! Warm regards and best wishes. - Kathy

attorney general is the obvious choice.

i'm a fan of dan.

I like the sound of Attorney General Dan Gelber

Dear Dan: I was so saddened to learn of your departure from the Senate race. That's a real loss to the State of FLorida and to the nation. I do understand the reasons which you have outlined, however. I am eager to strongly consider (and will most probably support) a slate which you support. Please keep me informed and best of luck in all! Phyllis

I for one am glad to hear of your changed course Dan. After meeting with you at Howard Drive Elementary, I was reluctant to let you go to DC. We need you here, closer to home and participating in the changes Florida needs to make to ensure a quality education is given to all children. Thanks for making this choice - I look forward to the next bit of news from your camp! Leanne

Dan, I certainly believe you have the credentials for statewide office and would enjoy talking about that in the coming weeks and months. - M

Dan: We, of course, trust your judgment. Let us know how we may continue to help you with whatever plan you develop given the flux in Florida government. - Stuart

Dear Dan, I respect your choice and help in any way I can. Thank you for your service and I look forward to a grand win. - Connie

I hope to see you run for something else- I think the AG race might be a good choice for you. You're very qualified. Thanks for the truth. Keep on bloggin'-Mel

The Madison County DEC is recovering from Republican dominance in Florida. Your assessment is on target. We need to do better in Florida. Best wishes on your decision. We will support the Democratic candidates and will strive to encourage independents to do the same.

I think you made the right decision Dan!- Lydia

I am glad to know you have stepped aside in the interest of strenghtening our chances as a united party. Many thanks!- Steph

I glad that you are stepping back from the senate race. I do believe that you are destined for the national stage but right now our state needs you. And as you said, the domino effect opens great opportunities for you and other democrats to bring some much needed change to our state. I hope to help in what you do decide to do.

Dan:I appreciate your decision. I agree that the unity of the Party is foremost. I am ready to get to work for Alex Sink just I tirelessly did for Obama.Let's get it done!- Gail

Thanks Dan! I think this was a good decision, and I will back you 100% on what ever seat you decide to run for. Best wishes and much success in whatever you decide to do. - Chris

Several people mentioned that your speech was great over the weekend. Congratulations on a very smart move. Of course, I am not surprised. - Craig

Dan we are behind you 100% whether you decide to run or not...Bottom line is if you dont run its going to be a difficult choice to vote for someone else..its a shame because these gangsters in Tallahasse have been running Florida far too long... - RAF

Dan, I was shocked to hear this on TV. So I guess it's support Meek for the U.S. Senate and you will remain in Tally to help us take back the State? - RP

My support for you was based on what I observed on the few times that I met you. I believe that you have the correct image of what a public official should be. I believed and still believe that you would be the best choice that the Democratic Party could make for our U.S. Senate candidate. I have heard rumors that you may withdraw from the Senate race to run for Attorney General. I believe that it is important that we have more Democrats running the State Government as well as the Federal Government. I would support you for any state wide office for which you decided to run. I will probably be a little disappointed if you decide not to continue your run for the Senate, but in the end you are the one who must make the decision about what is best for you, the Democratic Party, our State and the Nation. I trust that you will make the correct decision, and may God help you.You friend and supporter,Ernie

Hello Dan, Thank you for the update. I'm interested in hearing more of what you have in mind regarding Florida's future. Particularly regarding healthcare, and equal rights for all people wanting to be married. Thanks again,Amy

How very disappointing, although I totally understand, and wish you the best.- Ana

Dan, Florida needs Democrats like you. Please run for CFO. I'll volunteer for your campaign and contribute!- Peter

Senator Gelber, Thanks for your honesty and transparency. We need guys like you in FL government. I think you've got a great shot at the Attorney General race. -Linda P.

You have once again demonstrated you are a selfless public service, the state of Florida needs you! Thank you for your hard work, John.

Dear Senator Gelber,I was glad to see that you were going to run for the U.S. Senate, and you had my support. I am sorry that you have changed your mind. But, I agree that changes must be made on the state level, both for the governor's race and for both the state house and the state senate. I look forward to hearing from you about how you would implement those changes.- RF

Dear Dan, I respect your decision and believe you've shown once more your good judgement. Senator Gelber: Would you consider running for the vacant Attorney General position? - Stanley

Dan, you are a man who posesses a high level of integrity. Stepping down from this race is a move that reassures me of the cohesion of the Democratic party and your true dedication to the people of the state of Florida. I sincerely wish other politicians would look to you as an example of what really matters- issues and progress, not personal gain. I hope to see you run for Attorney General, your presence is desperately needed! I wish you the best in your future endeavors. -Steven G.

Dan, Quite frankly I was disappointed but understand completely. I want to see you win and have the power to make changes not be pushed aside or forgotten. In a way you are doing what Hillary Clinton needed to do to make way for Obama. Whatever role you can play to keep your name known and respected is important at this juncture. I understand your reasons for not running for the Senate. However, I think you could win the Democratic nomination and maybe even beat Crist. Good luck and I am with you regardless of position you run for. - Joseph

I think you made a great move, now we just need to convince to run for AG!!!

Dan, this comes as quite a surprise to me. I figured that you were going to have a battle on your hands, but I expected you to win. I am sorry that you chose to withdraw from the race. I not only understand that decision, I have huge amount of respect for you as a result of you making that decision. In most circumstances, individuals, especially politicians, make decisions based upon what is in their best interest. It is quite unusual for a politician to make a decision based upon what he believes is in the best interest of the masses, instead of his own selfish interests. I applaud you for making this decision and hope that you will help move this state in a much different direction. You had to fight the majority as a Representative. Hopefully, you will be able to lead the majority in the Florida Senate in the very near future. And if the Florida citizens finally realize what the Republicans have done to us, Alex Sink and Kendrick Meek will get elected as well. My best wishes to you and your family. I am sure that this was a very difficult decision to make.- Robert

Dear Dan,Yes, I agree with your decision. We need to get as many dems in as many positions as possible....as long as they are honest, ethical, dems with good conscience, of course!- Michele

Congratulations on making a very sound and wise decision.- Joyce

I know this was a difficult decision for you. There is no doubt that Florida need good leadership to dig us out of the mess that the Republicans have made of it over the past decade. I applauded your willingness to step aside from the US Senate and I hope sincerely that you will run for attorney general as I think you would be fantastic!- JCL

Dan, I believe you to be a good statesman and you have done a good job for your district. I'll be glad to help you on your run for AG though. - David

Thanks, Dan. I understand and respect your decision.- Frank

Senator Gelber,I'm disappointed, but in full support of your decision. You would have made a great U.S. Senator. I hope you will be endorsing a democratic candidate for the Senate.Respectively,Joe

Dan:I am disappointed that you will not be representing us in Congress (at least not yet). You are a far better candidate than K. Meek. However, I will support you whatever you do, which I know will be something great. I'm not politically savvy enough to know what that is.All the best,Harriett

Thank you for your wise decision. - Seth

I am disappointed that you won't be a candidate, but very happy that we will be spared a primary fight...heard you at the SRQ Dem meetings and have been very impressed with your ideas. Keep up the good fight - Mary

Hi Dan….I would still like to see you in a state-wide campaign as I believe you have great qualifications and have served our area well in the state legislature. I think you have exercised good common sense. Good luck!!! - Ira

Dan, This may not be helpful because I'm virtually an unconditional supporter of yours. I really liked the idea of you in the US Senate because I thought you'd "class-up the place". Seriously, I don't think many people understand how Florida government (and Florida politics) works as well as you. And, if anyone can be effective and lead Florida in the right direction - it's you. You pick your spot - I'll be there to support you. - Andy

WE need Democratic candidates. For too long Democrats have sat back and let Republicans have their way in this state and this country. Not until two very unlikely candidates (Obama and Clinton) stood up and ran against a formidable Republican did we have a chance to take this country back. If you are a politician, stand up and run for the Senate and give Crist, who is all talk and NO ACTION for us, a fight. Take a deep breath, and think about this. Nobody thought Obama would win either. - Patricia

Sir, I commend your decision to not diminish our chances for another seat in Congress.I admire you tremendously and will work hard for you in whatever you decide to do....Atty General? I look forward to learning more from you. Sincerely,Tracy

You have once again demonstrated that you are more concerned about the people and the party than about political gain or fighting to the bitter end with friends. Let me know which statewide seat you are going to seek, you will have my support.- Daniel, Miami Shores

I think you would be the ideal and perfect candidate for Attorney General. Dave Aronberg should run for CFO and Rod Smith should be Alex Sink's running mate. This would be a great slate. Meek for Senate, Sink/Smith, Aronberg for CFO and Gelber for AG. The strongest ticket since 1990 when Chiles/McKay ran. Best,John

Hi Dan:I respect your decision and admire your attitude towards unifying the party. Alex Sink has the potential to revitalize a strong Democratic presence in Florida and our commitment to support her canadidacy can only grow sgronger in the months to come. Let's move forward. Peace,Mo

You know - I will vote for you.GG

Mr. Gelber,I appreciate your communication on this decision. And although I would have been very happy to support you in our state primary, I understand and agree with your reasoned assessment of the situation. Once you decide where you'd like to cast your lot, I'm confident that you'll let me and other supporters know. You represent a high quality democratic public servant in a state where that isn't always easy. Thanks for letting me know about your decision. Godspeed.Madison

If what you wanted to do was move up the food chain then find another way to do it which will garner support from the party. I continue to be available to help as needed.- Holly

I think you've made the right decision - for yourself and for the party. But like many people, I trust that you will run for another office. Vincent

Senator Gelber,I just wanted you to know that I am dissapointed, yet understanding, of your decision to drop out of the race. However, I would like for you to try to run for governor at the least, because I feel as though your talents as representative of the people should be extended over the entire citizenry of our state. I would strongly support your candidacy, and maybe the first ballot I would cast would be for you. You have my approval in whichever endeavor you follow,Patrick, age 15Miami Beach

You've made a very smart and brave move. I wouldn't want to challenge Crist and have to raise money against his race for the senate. I also see it as an opportunity for the Democrats to lead Florida at a time when Florida needs the Dems. Good luck to you and thank you for sending the email explanation.Suzanne

Dan,I'm delighted that the Democratic party is working to avoid divisive primaries (and the accuracy of the old Will Rogers' statement: "I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Democrat). Run for AG.- M

Hi Dan, As your longtime supporter and admirer, I want to say that Iapplaud your decision to step back from the U.S. Senate race. While Ihave no doubt that you would serve Florida admirably in Washington, Ibelieve you can have an even greater impact as a leader in the FloridaSenate. If ever there was a time when we need strong, clear-headed andadept leadership in Tallahassee, it is right now.Thank you for making this decision, it has increased my respect foryou as a politician and as our representative. I look forward toworking with you for many years to come.Jessica

Please run for Governor! The State of Florida needs you!!!!!!!-David

Dan,I was a volunteer in the Obama campaign in Volusia County last fall and was looking forward to supporting you in the Senate race. Whatever you can do to support the goals of Obama Democrats

A good move. You have my support whatver you chose to do. But let's get the Republicans out of Tallahassee.- Bob

Dear Dan,In a conversation with a group of old-time Democrats last year, I wondered aloud how the Republicans had managed to keep such a stronghold in government when their politicians were so out of touch with American values. The reason, I was told, is that Republicans rally around and support their candidate, whereas Democrats tear down our candidates in the primaries, leaving them too battered to win in the general election. I commend your decision to help the Democrats unify and win the governorship of Florida. All the best,Sabrina

I am sad u withdrew. thought u were the best candidate for senate.Jeff

Dan, Run for AG!- Chuck

Dan, I have been hoping that you would make a run for the Senate; but I totally agree with the reasons you have cited for not making it happen. I do want you to know that I would be happy to be of help whenever you decide to run and would be happy to assist you with anything in Palm Beach County you may need. We need your kind of leadership and character in places where you can make a difference. Good luck in finding the right time and place! Best,Mickey

Dan,I was a volunteer in the Obama campaign in Volusia County last fall and was looking forward to supporting you in the Senate race. Whatever you can do to support the goals of Obama Democrats

Dear Dan:You will always have our support.

I'm so sorry that you won't be in the race because I truly believe you would have been a wonderful senator. However, I also applaud you for stepping back and making it easier for a Democrat to, hopefully, be our next senator. We'll spend less money and have more time to go after the Republicans in this critical race. Thanks for doing the right thing. You are a true gentleman and I'm proud you're a part of my great party!!!! Pat

Dan, I think you would be a great Fla. Attorney General. I hope that you will give it serious thought. Whatever you decide, it is imperative that you stay in public life. Your intelligence, courage and savvy are vitally needed in this state. Janet

SEEMS OBVIOUS...RUN FOR GOV!

Terry

Dan, It was great talking to you at the Young Dems event at the JJ I know that whatever position you choose to pursue, you will do what is best for you and the people of Florida. Thank you for being a class act and setting such a great example for other FL politicians.

All these comments are very impressive. I urge you consider the huge task of becoming Florida's Chief Financial Officer. Your investigative and prosecutorial background is excellent preparation. I hope to see Alex Sink Governor and Scott Maddox our Attorney General.

Go for Attorney General!!! You can bring the change Florida desperately needs.

Dan: As always, whatever you decide to do, we are behind you. Marty

Dan,Thank you for stepping back from the Senate Race. I am a strong supporter, but I believe it is far more important to gain a Senate seat then to lose after you and Congressman Meek beat each other up in a "where-does-the-heart-of-the-party-lie" primary. As for what's next...Florida doesn't require that you live in the US House District you run to represent...So why don't you run for Kendrick Meek's seat in Congress? He might just be willing to back you (and help clear the field). This would allow Dave Aronberg to run for AG, and when Bill Nelson retires in a a term or two, you'll have the DC experience to run for and win a Senate seat.

Good thing you're going to win the Attorney General's seat, right?? :D You did the right thing for the state, and ultimately, this will work out in your favor in the end!

Run for Attorney-General. Seriously.

While I am disappointed, I agree...think your time and efforts are best spent where you are, unless opportunity for AG comes up. May be too early timing wise to go for US Senate. You will be there eventually, I just know it!And this gives you more opportunity now to build recognition and frankly to spearhead some good "Gelber-like" initiatives. You're a leader. We need you. And I'm ready to help whatever it is!So very very proud of you!

Diane

Dan, I think you should run for atty-Gen. or Lt. Gov. with Alex if you could carve out specific areas of responsibility as Bubby Mackay did with Lawton.

Run for governor the last one ran Florida into the ground. Monica

Dan, First I want to thank you again for all you do for the citizens of Florida.Someone told me you were thinking about Atty. General, I was overjoyed. I couldn't be happier to see the Deans of Florida trying to put a plan for the future of our great state. It has been a few years that we have been on the defense, with non-since-a cruel results. I firmly believe a strong Atty. General will be able to help our New Democratic Governor with recovering contractual and outsourced functions that are essential to the core infrastructure of Government. The Atty. General has always spoken up for consumers in our state...I am always up for that. Hooked on your wagon man! I would like to participate where your awesome group goes!

Attorney General or Governor...Dan we need you in office! People like you don't come along too often in politics. Thanks for all you've done so far!

Run Dan Run. Gelber for Attorney General. I love the idea!

Anything you want to do, Dan, I'm all behind you. You are a fine and intelligent public servant. Florida needs you. - Steve

Thanks for thinking of what is best for Florida. I appreciate it. - Jeanne

Governor Gelber?

Senator Gelbert,Thank you for your letter. I think you've laid out a very logical reasonable explanation for seeking an avenue that would serve the Floridians in an even greater capacity and you can count on my continued support in your endeavor.

Very well said, and although the news is disappointing, I wish you good luck with whatever you decide to do in the future!

Linda

I think you have assessed the state of affairs correctly and you are doing the right thing. Crist believes he can get out of doing the heavy lifting that Florida needs and not be tainted with the hard decisions that have to be made. What have you decided to do? It is important that you be part of the solution to our problems.

Larry

I'm really proud of you and been following your career and I know you have good intentions to help florida and its residents. Which ever way you decide to run you always will have my vote.

I think you would have a great chance of winning the attorney general's seat. I hope you will run for this.Julie

Florida will benefit from your inclusion as a statewide leader. Given a protracted and costly primary and the likelihood of a well funded opponent in the general election, I think your decision to focus on statewide elected office makes a lot of sense. Thanks for representing us with a set of values from a leader who we believe in now and for years to come.

Although I know that you would've represented us well in the Senate, I understand your decision to step aside. Please count on me to support you in your efforts at the State level, certainly a venue where your intelligent and thoughtful decisionmaking is sorely needed. In fact, I'll be happy to work in Key Biscayne to promote your candidacy at any level.

DanI will support you in whatever you do. Personally, I would like to see you run for Attorney General.

Scott

I have held you in very high regard. With this decision, I hold you in even higher regard. You are very astute and very well qualified to be the leader that you are in the Democratic Party. I look forward to your identifying a different position to seek when the time comes. Thanks for your service, and please stay deeply involved. We, the people of Florida, need you.

What an amazingly selfless thing to do! You have a supporters in my family...whatever direction you may take. I am certain that whatever you do, it will be great.Good luck in your future endeavors and know that you have a fan here!

I'm here in support whatever steps you decide to take.- T

Dear Dan,I was behind you 250% and if you add 110 to that you have a full circle! I was VERY dissapointed to hear that you were stepping down but then I realized that politically it was the right thing for you to do. We all know that Alex Sink will win and become the next governor of Florida; personally I hope that you obtain a position within her administration. If you do not, it will hurt you politically and it will be hard for you to gain the bi-partisian votes that you need to obtain higher office in the future.

Senator Dan,

Say the word and I'm out knocking on doors for you to be our next attorney general in Tallahassee.

Sam in Weston

DG for AG!

DG for AG!

DG for AG!

DG for AG!

DG for AG!

Dan, You are a lawyer's lawyer, as well as very intelligent and honest; As an AG, I think the race will be a slam dunk for you. (no pun intended) Imagine what good you could do against the corrupt banks and insurance companies that victimize Floridians; You have my vote sir.

thanks Dan. Let me know what you decide to do and I hope to be helpful.

take care,
Jim

Run for Attorney General. We need you! - Gary

My personal, not professional, opinion is that you would make a great attorney general. It would be a smart next step!

I'm impressed.

Dear Dan, I support your decision to step back from the US Senate race. As for future plans, I encourage you to run for Florida Attorney General. Your skills and talents could be effectively used in that position and provide a state wide platform for other opportunities. Be assured you will have my financial support for such an effort.

Good luck going forward; please let me know how we can be of help.

Hi Dan,

Hope you consider the Attorney General race. I would love to be involved with that campaign. Please count on me! Go get them Dan!

Irene

Best of luck in your attempt to improve the political landscape in Tallahassee. We will be working hard here in St. John's county for democrats and wish you the best of success.

Dan, sorry to hear the news of your withdrawal form the U.S. Senate race but understand the reasons. Thank you for letting your supporters know. How about Attorney General?

Best regards,
Maria

What about Gelber for CFO??? You can win that easily!

Dan: I am committed to helping you.

Alex

Whatever you do, count on me. - Jackie

Dan, You have my support (and as a former law professor my admiration for running that many lawyers!). I hope that if you do choose to run, that you'll make a visit to the Panhandle.

Hey Dan,I have nothing but admiration for your ability to see past what is, and keeping your eye on what can be. I firmly believe that you should be the next candidate for Attorney General. We need a democrat in that seat. I hope you consider it. -Nick D

You can count on it. I wish you all the best. Thanks for all you are doing.

Madison

I am very sorry to see that you have withdrawn. I understand perfectly why you wouldn't want to raise in-fighting within the party by running against a fellow Democrat (I wish others in other races were so considerate!). Democrats in Florida are killing themselves within the party, either by too vigorous campaigning against fellow Democrats in the primaries or dividing our voter base unnecessarily. We rank-and-file Democrats really resent having our choices decided for us up front, for whatever reason. I would be quite happy to support you in whatever race you might choose to enter.

Connie

Dear, Senator Gelber I personally think that was a great decision. And Yes we do need to focus on Florida. Our state is in a horrible condition, especially when it comes to education. We don't not have control of our House or Senate, and that's why we are not moving forward with our Democratic Agenda. Please continue to work on education and also our Juveniles, when a lot of them are being Direct Filed. Not given them a chance to come back into society to be productive adults.

Thanks,
Sharon

We need 1. A REAL LAWYER as our AG and not a political hack ideologue ; 2. someone who is SMART and 3. Someone who can get votes. I love Rod Smith but there are like what, 14 people in Gainesville? I think you would be a wonderful candidate and hope you announce whatever your decision is SOON so we can get things going.

You can count on my unconditional support.

I believe you to be sincere and intelligent and appreciate your continued efforts in the political arena.

Wholeheartedly, you have my support!

Dan, Please run for Attorney General or CFO…you would be the best candidate for either of these…Norma

I am very disappointed to hear that you are not going to run for the Senate. We could use a former prosecutor in DC! However, Tallahassee is in even worse shape (if that's possible) and I am hopeful that the Democrats can gain ground there in the next election cycle. Best of luck to you.

We appreciate your work, admire your spirit, and respect your decision. We only hope that Florida and the rest of the nation have not seen the last of you.

I really wish you would have stayed in the race—how about Attorney General??

It is with great disappointment that I learned of your decision, but I know it was becauseyou have always put the good of the people of Florida first and will continue to serve well as you have in the past. Thank you very much for that marvelous service. Best wishes to you and your family.

Go dan!!

Dan, You're going to enjoy great support in all of your pursuits. Count on my support.

Good luck. Florida needs you!

Mark Hollis
